Long Weekend in Jindabyne

Published Wed 29 Jun 2022

Over the June long weekend, Jindabyne was alive with activity, especially for biathletes. It was the place to be! Thanks to an unusually early dump of snow down south, Jindabyne and Perisher were in prime condition, with fresh snow and primed slopes. There were activities for all ages and abilities happening over the course of the weekend.

The Jindabyne training camp started with a training session from 9am on Saturday morning. This was a session focusing on perfecting skills and technique on the ski. This was also race preparation of the Laser Biathlon Summer Series Event No 5, which was the following day. On Saturday afternoon, biathletes competed in the FIS Snowy Mountains Nordic Challenge, which included a Time Trial, using an interval start format, a head-to-head race based on the time trial and then a team event. The were some great results for biathletes with World Juniors representative, Noah Bradford taking 1st place across the whole field, closely followed by Samuel Johnson, Jack Hirst, Ally Sydun-West and Rhiannon Castle. In fact biathletes took 8 of the top 10 placings! For full results, click here.

Then Sunday came around, and it was time for the NSW Laser Biathlon Summer Series Event No 5. It’s not every day that we have a Summer Series event held on snow! Thanks to the early snow dump, 23 biathletes were able to race on snow, making this event even more exciting. All the competitors had great performances in this event, which marked the last of the summer series events for 2022. Results for this race can be seen here

After these two events, the Jindabyne camp continued into its last day, Monday. It started with an early trek up to the Laser Range, with a beautiful sunrise greeting the athletes. For Monday, it was a focus on technique, with sessions being held in both classic and skate.

The weekend was such a great opportunity to get back on snow after 2 years absence due to COVID 19 and the athletes all agreed it was fantastic to be back on snow biathlon training. Thank you to the volunteers and officials for your time helping with the racing on the weekend, it would not have happened without you!
